Philosophy
Made From Scratch are experts in play design and build. We delight in handcrafting playable landscapes with the principles of love and care woven throughout – from first concept to project handover, with embedded training on play theory and play practice for staffed playgrounds.
We believe access to quality, collaborative, site specific design using high-quality materials is the right of everyone. We recognise that play has transformative therapeutic powers for both individuals and the wider community.
We design ecological interventions for all our playgrounds to increase access to nature, improve biodiversity and mitigate the effects of climate change reducing children’s access to play.

Our background is in the anarchic “experimental place of endless possibilities” in the urban adventure playground. This essence, spirit and form inspire the projects and training that we provide. The materials, methods and practice we have developed over the years are a multi-layered contemporary evolution of this anarchic spirit.
Creative collaboration and community engagement are at the heart of what we do. We have delivered workshops to hundreds of children and young people across London and taught playground carpentry to many diverse groups.
We are an ethical social enterprise that improves access to play opportunities by advocating and training for play alongside our landscaping projects. We also support grassroots community play projects pro bono funded by our work. We tailor our advice and designs to maximise access to play, not profit.
Several of our skilled build team are also play, youth and forest school workers who bring a fresh holistic approach to creating our unique landscapes.

Social Impact
We make playgrounds that have a lasting positive impact. We monitor previous builds to gain an understanding of how play positively affects the individual and society. This has allowed us to amass a wealth of evidence for the benefits of play from everyone that has played on our landscapes.
Quality
We craft our playscapes from the most durable materials – hardwood, stone, mature trees and shrubs and stainless steel play components. When building our innovative designs, new techniques are often developed to realise our one-of-a-kind playgrounds.
Community
Our process places the community at the heart of our work. We achieve this through build consultations and carpentry workshops. With ongoing creative collaboration we create a genuine and lasting sense of ownership over time.
Art + Craft
Our designs place great importance on the finished aesthetic without compromising play value. Our style cherishes the value of unique and hand shaped structures, whilst complementing the surrounding environment.
Nature
We increase biodiversity with every landscaping project by increasing shading, planting trees and building living sedum roofs. Mitigating the impact of climate change in reducing children’s access to play is increasingly vital. We donate deconstructed and salvaged play equipment to partner London adventure playgrounds.
Satisfaction
Our experience in delivering projects on time and to budget has given us the reputation we have in the industry. We take great pride in our work, and have an unwavering focus on the details needed to make durable and impressive structures for our clients who we relish ongoing creative collaboration with.
Play
Play has multiple proven psychological and physical benefits. It is intrinsically motivated, fractal in its individual possibilties, and essential for human development. We create unique spaces that facilitate access to risk and challenge and provide a sanctuary for the imagination for all.
Love
We are proud to say love is one of the foundations of our practice. We cherish designing and building landscapes crafted with love, and inhabiting this principle in our connections with the communities we work with, within our creative build team, and to the earth itself.
