Spaceship + Sputnik

With Baba Yaga's House
These structures were designed and built in the garden of a popular Stratford based children's charity. We collaborated closely with the centre to design and build unique structures to match the levels of intricacy and detail of the interior displays of the centre. The concept of a friendly alien space ship visiting earth, collecting children’s stories was the springboard of the design rationale. The balance of designing to fulfil an imaginative play brief that must also be fully accessible internally to both toddlers, babies, older children and their parents was an interesting challenge. The buildable footprint area was very small, surrounded by mature planting and there was no drive on access to the site.
The anthropomorphic spaceship and "sputnik" structure, linked together with suspended oak crawling tunnel and repurposed slide was central to the scheme. A climbing wall, talking tubes, and a top observatory plus a wide slide off the lower deck of the space ship facilitated play for all abilities. For toddlers we created "Baba Yagas House" that stands on two giant chicken legs, and is our mash up version of creating a fairytale gingerbread house, hidden amongst the trees. An outdoor mud kitchen, tucked away triangle den, and refurbished grounds, fencing and surfacing completed this magical build.
