Hexagon Hive

Parkour Stack + Playable Embankment
The design of this parkour stack was inspired by our research into the geometric shapes of brutalist-era playgrounds created during the time this school was built. This hive rises up to 4.5m high. The form of the hexagon is endlessly playable in, on, across and through all its dimensional planes. Many play types can layer up simultaneously on this structure from balancing, leaping and chasing games with hiding, crawling beneath, traversing, hanging on the bars and chilling in the top level “rave room” telling stories.
Natural landscaping of a formerly dilapidated terrace with massive boulders and balance beams, adjacent to the hive created a fully playable micro woodland with multiple routes between the hex stack and the bank for endless imaginative games. A tree house, hidden pod den, and group rope swing complete this playground. Like many of our school playgrounds the enclosed play structures are designed to obscure the view of the school building to the children when they are are playing, to allow full immersion in their play and completely transport their imaginations.
