Playable Roofline

Inspired By The Surrounding Architecture
The intricate flourishes on the roof of this 1900s era school in Walthamstow inspired us to create a unique slide climber, to allow children to scramble over and under a playful representation of their school roof. Mitigating the potential effects of climate change on children's access to play was another essential of the design brief. This was achieved by increasing shade across the site, both in the design and placement of the structures, and with landscaping and planting.
We removed a chunk of tarmac playground to plant a grove of mature field maples and created a shaded arbour of woven hazel, flowering climbers, herbaceous plants and shrubs. This mini forest school area was completed with a gorgeous mud kitchen, granite boulder and mosaic river and sand area with tipi tucked in the corner. A MFS classic “sunbeam” standalone treehouse design, for when there are no suitable trees to attach to, was surrounded by islands of bamboo in recycled pipe planters.
