Wild Early Years

Natural, Playable Terrace of Delight
MFS reimagined the terrain comprehensively on this early years project. We designed and built this landscape connecting to the Mangrove climber project. This was neglected ground, formerly fenced off and inaccesible to the children. Training in play risk / benefit for the staff and increasing knowledge and understanding of plants and the benefits of children playing in a natural area was an essential part of this project.
We developed the landscape ecologically sensitively. We increased the species diversity by planting trees, creating sculptural log piles, and training climbers up fences and structures. We partially terraced the slope to create garden rooms of dens, nests, a willow tunnel, hammock, a treehouse on a willow stump and built a playable river. A scramble stack climber with balancing beams cascading down the slope was newly seeded with grass.
